NU wants to take a piece of slumping Ateneo
National University faces a sliding Ateneo de Manila.

National University looks to add more woes to a suddenly slumping defending champion Ateneo De Manila Lady Eagles on Wednesday.

Fresh from a bounce back win to end a three-game slide, the Lady Bulldogs hope to follow De La Salle and University of the Philippines' lead of taking down the mighty Lady Eagles on a rematch against their first round tormentors in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.

“Kung maniniwala kaming kaya namin silang talunin, kakayanin namin,” said 6-foot-5 NU middle blocker Jaja Santiago. “Kapag nag-doubt ka sa sarili mo na hindi mo kaya, hindi mo talaga kaya. Hindi kayo makakakilos ng maayos.”

Openinh serve is slated at 4:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23, ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream at sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/uaap.

Behind Myla Pablo and Santiago’s 14 and 13 points, respectively, the Lady Bulldogs swept Adamson University, 25-18, 25-12, 25-18, last Sunday for a 4-4 win-loss record they share with Far Eastern University and University of Sto. Tomas in a three-way logjam for fourth to sixth spot.

NU hopes to put a stop to their four-game head-to-head losing streak to Ateneo since getting beaten twice by the Lady Eagles in the Season 76 stepladder semifinals.

The Lady Bulldogs wants to avenge its 21-25, 19-25, 14-25 loss to the Lady Eagles in the season opener last January 31.

On the other hand, Ateneo is on a two-game losing slump for the first time since Season 76 after suffering a 25-19, 22-25, 17-25, 22-25, setback at the hands of a young and very hungry UP side four days ago.

Reigning Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez and Jho Maraguinot finished with 19 and 15 markers to lead the Lady Eagles in a lost cause that saw the Katipunan-based squad slide to 6-2 record in a share of the top spot with rival DLSU, which handed Ateneo its first loss after 24 straight victories at the end of the first round almost two weeks ago.

The Lady Eagles’ character and school pride will be tested once again as they try to avoid a third straight defeat, which Ateneo last suffered in Season 75 against the Lady Spikers to end the first round and at the hands of Adamson and FEU to start the second.
