The Ateneo Blue Eagles flew past the UE Red Warriors in UAAP Season 78 Men's Football action.
Julian Roxas broke the deadlock in the midway through the second half to power the Ateneo Blue Eagles past the UE Red Warriors, 2-1, Thursday morning at the Moro Lorenzo Field in Ateneo to end the first round of the UAAP Season 78 Men’s Football tournament on a high note.
Blue Eagles skipper Mikko Mabanag opened the scoring for the home team late in the first half, sending one straight into the back of the net from the corner with five minutes remaining in the half.
The lead wouldn’t last long however, as Khyndale Manzo picked up the scraps from a missed attempt and blasted one in at the 42nd minute for the equalizer and UE’s second goal of the season.
Roxas gave the Blue Eagles a bit of breathing room in the 62nd minute after making good on a Jarvey Gayoso assist for the 2-1 advantage.
After the assist, Gayoso looked to score one himself, testing UE keeper Lendon Clores on a number of occasions, but couldn’t add the the Ateneo lead.
The Red Warriors also tried finding another equalizer with attempts coming from rookie Mar Diano.
With four minutes added to injury time, UE took a couple more chances to pull even, but to no avail as Ateneo came away with an important win to end the first round of competition.
After the match, Mabanag spoke about bouncing back from a slow first half and trying to get back on track.
“We’re trying to do everything step by step. The morale is going up slowly, but don’t expect a big leap kaagad. Step-by-step, one game at a time.”
The win puts Ateneo temporarily at fifth place with three wins and four losses for nine points, one point above NU, who meets DLSU next.
UE remains at the bottom of the standings with one draw and six losses for one point after the first round.
