"If we keep putting the pressure on the top four teams, one of them might break down and we go up." - Mikko Mabanag
With the first round in the books for the Ateneo Blue Eagles, they temporarily find themselves at fifth place with nine points in the first seven games.
While the Blue Eagles, last season’s fourth seed after the eliminations, are certainly still in the running, they’re not quite in the position that they’d like to be in. For skipper Mikko Mabanag, their gameplan heading into the second round involves making things hard for the league’s top four teams.
“Just pile on the pressure on the top four, and eventually we’ll make it there. If we keep putting the pressure on the top four teams, one of them might break down and we go up. That’s the goal now, pero again, we want to do it step by step. Walang easy process dito, walang shortcuts.”
The senior, who’s on his last tour of duty with the Blue Eagle booters, also said that they were able to talk things out just before their final first round game, a win against UE.
“We had a team talk yesterday, and it was good. We were able to fix them, and namulatan lahat sila. Nabukas yung mga mata nila to the things that we need to address.”
With one more round of football left, the goal remains the same for the Katipunan-based squad, and that’s make a post-season appearance.
“The initial goal is just to make it to the top four, and that’s still the goal right now. If we make it to the top four, then we’ll see what happens after. “
