Triple-header closes out UAAP Men’s Football first round

Matches on Thursday, March 10 (Moro Lorenzo Football Field)

1:00 PM: NU vs. DLSU

3:00 PM: UST vs. UP

The first round of the UAAP Men’s Football tournament comes to a close with a huge triple-header Thursday at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo de Manila, as last-placers University of the East takes on Ateneo, followed by a matchup between National University and top-seeded De La Salle University, and then two surging teams in University of Santo Tomas and University of the Philippines clash in the last match of the day.

Yet to score a win this season, the UE Red Warriors will look to close out the first round on a high note. They’ll be coming into their Thursday matchup with a renewed sense of hope, as they managed to score their first goal of the season courtesy of rookie Mar Vincent Diano in the losing effort against FEU.

After picking up a couple of big wins including one against contenders NU, the Ateneo Blue Eagles look like they’ve stumbled quite a bit again after suffering a loss against one of this season’s biggest surprises in UST. They head into Thursday’s matchup sitting at the middle of the pack, and are looking to end the round on a positive note.

Once holding the top spot in the standings, NU is also looking to get back to winning as well. The Bulldogs, who had a hot start with two straight wins and a draw, saw themselves take a stumble with losses to UST and Ateneo, managed to arrest their losing skid by holding UP to a draw over the weekend.

Fresh off their destruction of Adamson, the league-leading DLSU Green Archers will be looking to end the round with another dominant win. With production coming from different parts of the team, the Green Archers have proven to be one of the most dangerous teams in the competition, and their unbeaten record is a clear indicator of the Archers’ talent this season.

One of the biggest surprises this season is the impressive start of the UST Tigers, who are also unbeaten and have taken down some of the league’s contenders in FEU, NU, and Ateneo to hold a second-place spot. They end the round against another team that seems to have found their groove as well.

After a slow start, the UP Maroons piled up three straight wins and earned valuable points that now have them back in the running for a final four spot. After going to a draw last week against NU, they hope to get a win back on Thursday to finish the round with a bit of momentum.
