Rampaging Lady Maroons set sights on fourth straight win

University of the Philippines will try to fan its blazing streak against an Adamson team adjusting to new interim coach Domingo Custodio.
University of the Philippines hopes to avoid the so-called ‘cloud nine jinx’ on Saturday as the Lady Maroons gun for their fourth straight win in a battle with Adamson Lady Falcons, who will parade a new coach, in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Head coach Jerry Yee steered the Lady Maroons to a huge upset last week when the rookie-laden Diliman-based squad submitted the mighty two-time defending champion Ateneo De Manila, 19-25-, 25-22, 25-17, 25-22, to end a nine-year, 17-game losing streak to the Lady Eagles.
It is UP’s fifth win in eight games to land at solo third spot.
But Yee said that he is keeping his wards emotions in check so as not to join the trend of meltdowns on teams that are coming off big victories when they clash with the Lady Falcons at 2:00 p.m. The duel will air live on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23, ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream at sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/uaap.
“Uso ngayon ‘yun ‘yung nagka-cloud nine kuno,” said Yee. “So we’ll try to explain na lang to them. It’s a matter of ma-explain ng mabuti sa girls na ipaliwanag ang each and every situations.”
De La Salle University defeated Ateneo in the first round to end the Lady Eagles’ 24-game winning run only to be tripped by University of Sto. Tomas in straight sets in the following match. The Tigresses won against the taller National University Lady Bulldogs but were silenced by UP in their next assignment, something Yee wanted to avoid.
“So hopefully hindi kami ma-fall into that kind of choke or what,” he said. “Hopefully not.”
Yee will bank on rookies Isa Molde and Diana Carlos with veterans Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola to score a repeat win against Adamson, which they defeated 26-24, 25-27, 25-20, 25-19 in the first round.
Meanwhile, Adamson will have a new tactician in Domingo Custodio, also the Falcons coach in the men’s division, after the resignation of fourth year mentor Sherwin Meneses last Thursday.
The Lady Falcons are in seventh place with a 3-5 card and are coming off a three set setback against NU.
