After struggling in their past two outings, defending five-time champion Adamson University rediscovered their hitting prowess and crushed the University of Sto. Tomas, 9-2, to win Game 1 of the UAAP Season 78 Softball Finals in just five innings on Friday, March 11, 2016 at the historic Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
The Lady Falcons broke the ice in the second inning after a 1 RBI single from sophomore Layca Basa. Graduating 3rd baseman Krisna Paguican registered a 1RBI single of her own before centerfielder Lorna Adorable opened the floodgates with a 2 RBI double.
Despite trailing 4-0, the Tigresses responded in the following inning as Celestine Palma unleashed a groundball that led to a 2 RBI double. But, that would be the only points on the board for UST as Adamson came back even stronger at the top of the fifth.
Adorable once again made a solid connection with the ball, tallying a 2 RBI single. Gelyn Lamata followed it up with a 2 RBI double before Dely Covarrubias capped off the scoring total for the Lady Falcons with an RBI.
Adamson’s defense proved strong at the top of the fifth as they seized the win via the mercy rule.
Pong Benjamen pitched all five innings for the Lady Falcons and finished with four strikeouts.
Game 2 will take place on Monday, March 14, 2016 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium at 8:30 A.M.
