Lady Eagles out to start another winning roll

Ateneo de Manila will try to start another winning run using their happy and heart strong mantra.
Defending back-to-back champion Ateneo de Manila brought back the smile, happy play and heart strong mantra to snap out of a two-game slump.
The Lady Eagles will again use those elements in their showdown with Far Eastern University to start another winning run on Sunday in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Reigning two-time Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez pointed out that Ateneo need to play happy and enjoy the 4:00 p.m. game that will air live over ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166, ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 and via livestream on sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/uaap to improve their 7-2 win-loss record and remain on the top spot.
“We have to smile and be consistent as a team,” said Valdez, who scored 20 points in the Katipunan-based squad’s 26-24, 25-17, 25-19 win over National University last Wednesday to get back on the winning track.
“With us smiling, our skills and everything will naturally lalabas din naman ‘yan,” she added.
The Lady Eagles found themselves on a skid after absorbing a straight sets loss to bitter rival De La Salle University at the end of the first round that snapped their 24-game winning run and a four-set defeat to University of the Philippines to start the second round.
Ateneo recovered in their rematch with NU and are hoping to make a repeat of their 25-22, 25-19, 25-15 victory over the Lady Tams last February 10.
FEU, which is in solo fourth spot with a 5-4 card, is expected to use the strategy used by DLSU and UP to defeat the Lady Eagles by throwing heacy and long services to frustrate the suspect floor defense of Ateneo.
Valdez said they are already anticipating it from the Lady Tams.
“I think we really just have to compensate din siguro and improve other things. But we have to focus on our defense also but as much as possible kung may puwede kaming gawan ng paraan na iba kasi kailangan naming magtulungan sa depensa maga-adjust kami. Siguro ganoon lang,” she said.
FEU defeated University of the East in their previous match, 25-13, 25-18, 25-21.
