The National University Lady Bulldogs knew they needed a convincing win to get back their confidence that melted away when they lost four of their previous five games.
If they will use Sunday’s devastating win against the University of the East Lady Warriors, the Lady Bulldogs could be starting something to turn their season around.
Jaja Santiago’s towering presence both in offense and defense coupled by inspired games from Jorelle Singh and Myla Pablo powered NU as it steamrolled past the Lady Warriors, 25-15, 25-12, 25-11, for their fifth win in 10 games in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Santiago pounded 13 kills in her total of 16 points while Pablo finished with 10 makers with nine coming from the Lady Bulldogs' total of 39 kills. Singh had eight points Aiko Urdas added six markers for NU.
"We are having a very rough time right now. Kapag nananalo ka ng ganito sana makatulong sa mga bata," said head coach Roger Gorayeb.
NU's record puts its chances of landing one of the two twice-to-beat advantages on a flickering state. The Lady Bulldogs still have Far Eastern University, University of the Philippines, University of Sto. Tomas and De La Salle in their list of assignments.
The Lady Bulldogs recovered from a straight sets loss to defending back-to-back champion Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles the last time out to formally shut the Final Four door right in the faces of the Lady Warriors, who fell to a 0-10 win-loss record.
UE started the game confidently, taking an 8-7 lead before Santiago imposed her 6-foot-5 height advantage against the smaller Lady Warriors blockers for a big rally that put NU on top, 23-13, to take control of the frame.
The second set was a frustrating frame for UE as head coach Francis Vicente kept reminding her girls to fightback to no avail as the raging Lady Bulldogs ravaged the Lady Warriors.
It was the same story in the third set as UE’s losing woes continue to 55 straight since winning their last back in Season 74 against the Lady Bulldogs in five sets last January 28, 2012.
Shaya Adorador was the only Lady Warrior in double figures with 11 points.
