Maroons boot out Red Warriors in Final Four race

University of the Philippines eliminated University of the East from the Final Four race.
University of the Philippines narrowed the 78th UAAP men's volleyball tournament Final Four race to seven teams.
The Fighting Maroons officially knocked out hapless University of the East from contention, breezing past the Red Warriors, 25-9, 25-22, 25-19, Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
Veterans Alfred Valbuena and Wendel Miguel terrorized the defense of the Red Warriors to come up with double-digit productions for UP's fifth win in 10 outings at fifth spot.
The duo combined for 22 of the Maroons 32 kills with Valbuena finishing with a total of 13 points while Miguel had 11 markers and 12 perfect receives for UP, which halted a two-game slide.
Ahead of the pack for the semifinals berths are the defending champion Ateneo de Manila, National University, Adamson University and Far Eastern University.
Gian San Pascual was a sentinel in front of the net for UP, swatting away seven of UE's attacks in the Maroons total of nine kill blocks. San Pascual finished with nine points. Charles Acuna orchestrated the offense of UP with 29 excellent sets.
UE absorbed its 10th straight setback of the season and a total of 24 losses in a row since last year’s edition.
Ruvince Abrot had 11 markers while Season 77 Rookie of the Year Edward Camposano got eight for the Red Warriors, who missed the semifinals for the 23rd straight time since the start of the Final Four era in 1994.
