De La Salle’s Cyd Demecillo was carried out of The Arena in San Juan on a stretcher.
De La Salle’s Cyd Demecillo is scheduled to undergo a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan Wednesday night after the outside hitter hyperextended her right knee in the closing play of the Lady Spikers’ 18-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-21 win against University of the Philippines in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
The graduating player was stretchered out of The Arena in San Juan with an ice bag wrapped around her knee. Head coach Ramil De Jesus said Demecillo was rushed to Makati Medical Center and will undergo tests to determine the real nature of her injury.
“Dinala sa ospital pero ayun 'di ko pa alam kung anong gagawin,” said De Jesus, who added that Demecillo complained of severe pain on her knees.
“Wala pang masasabi kasi kahit nga may mga doctor kanina, may mga possible na pwedeng mangyari pero mas maganda raw na i-MRI,” the mentor added. “Actually last week pa ‘yun sumasakit, 'yung game namin after ng UST sumakit na 'yun e. Di ko lang alam (kung ano talaga).”
Demecillo, who posted eight points in DLSU’s eighth win in 10 matches in a tie at the top spot with defending back-to-back champion Ateneo de Manila, hyperextended her knee while going in for a dig in the last play that Ara Galang finished with the match-clinching kill.
The UAAP beach volleyball champion was able to get up and celebrate with the Taft-based squad’s huddle in the middle of their court before collapsing while grimacing in pain. She was carried by her teammates into the dugout.
“Kanina siguro ‘yung pagkaka-bend niya mali. Sana hindi naman grabe,” said De Jesus of his ward who was just cleared of a stress fracture on her left shin last week.
DLSU has been a victim of the injury bug for the last two years.
Galang suffered a left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in last season's stepladder semifinals. Camille Cruz went down with a right knee injury during the Finals against Ateneo while Desiree Cheng missed this edition's roster after suffering an ACL injury during the off season.
