De La Salle tops University of the Philippines to remain unscathed in the second round.
Veteran De La Salle University star Mika Reyes thrived in the service line and the Lady Spikers banked on their battle-hardened roster to silence the gritty University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, 18-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-21 after shaking off a jittery start Wednesday in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The graduating middle blocker frustrated the defense of the Lady Maroons with heavy and long serves while Kim Dy and Ara Galang battered UP’s front court defensive line with relentless attacks to catapult the Lady Spikers back on top of the standings they share with bitter rival defending champion Ateneo de Manila.
Reyes scored five of her 14 points from the service line while Dy got 14 markers all from attacks for the Taft-based squad. Galang had 12 points with all but one coming from kills. Cyd Demecillo, who was carried off the court after the game due to cramps, and Majoy Baron posted eight points each.
"Nasabi ko naman sa inyo last time na malaking factor din ang pagiging bata ng team (UP). Although nandoon yung talent, pero pagdating ng mga crucial (stretch) kumakalas," said DLSU mentor Ramil De Jesus.
DLSU improved to 8-2 win-loss record and stretched its winning streak to three to remain unscathed in the second round.
Top rookies Isa Molde and Diana Carlos with Season 76 Best Blocker winner Kathy Bersola tried to carry UP’s fight in the fourth set, overhauling a 17-21 deficit with three straight points.
Poised and composed, DLSU returned fire with a 4-1 blast capped by a Galang smash to halt the Lady Maroons four-game run. UP slid to 6-4 slate.
Carlos finished with 14 points while Molde and Bersola combined for 15 for the Diliman-based volleybelles.
