The second round of UAAP Football begins to heat up as two squads with Final Four aspirations face tough tests Thursday afternoon at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo de Manila.

In the first match of the afternoon, the Ateneo Blue Eagles try to get a win streak going as they take on the last-place University of the East Red Warriors.

Season 78 hasn’t quite gone the way that the Blue Eagles would have liked, as they’re currently on the outside looking in, sitting at sixth place with three wins and four losses. They’ll be heading into this match with a bit of momentum though, as they look to pull out their second straight win at the hands of the Red Warriors.

Still in search of their first win this season, the Red Warriors have one more round to do so. With seven losses after the first round, the Warriors find themselves dead last in the men’s standings.

In their first round meeting, the Red Warriors came close to holding Ateneo to a draw after Khyndale Manzo immediately found an equalizer for Mikko Mabanag’s opening goal. Unfortunately for the Red Warriors, Julian Roxas connected on a game-clinching header in the second half.

In the second match of the afternoon, the National University Bulldogs take on the Adamson Falcons.

Following a strong start that saw them control the top of the standings, a string of losses have sent the NU Bulldogs down and out of the playoff picture for now. The Bulldogs are looking to avoid a repeat of last season’s close fifth place finish and are keeping themselves in the hunt, finishing the first round with two tough draws against UP and DLSU. They look to open the second round with a win against the struggling Falcons.

The Adamson Falcons have already made history this season, recording their first win since rejoining the UAAP Football program. It won’t mean that they’ll ease up this season, as the young and hungry falcons will look to earn even more wins in the second round.

In their first round meeting, Adamson keeper Carl Viray frustrated the Bulldogs until Paolo Salenga and Nico Macapal eventually scored to lead NU to a 2-0 win.
