Defending champion Ateneo de Manila is looking to occupy the first Final Four seat.
Back-to-back seeking Ateneo de Manila shoots for the first semifinals berth in the 78th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament when the Blue Eagles stake their seven-game winning streak against University of Sto. Tomas Saturday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Match is scheduled at 10:00 a.m. and will air live over ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23, ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream on sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/uaap.
The Blue Eagles tote a 9-1 win-loss card, winning their last seven games after absorbing its only loss so far of the season at the hands of Adamson in the first round.
Ateneo is already assured of at least a playoff for a Final Four spot. If the Katipunan-based squad makes a repeat over UST, the Blue Eagles will secure at least a playoff for a semifinals twice-to-beat advantage.
But head coach Oliver Almadro’s concern for now is to keep Ateneo’s momentum going.
“One game at a time lang kami. Paghahandaan namin ang lahat ng mga kalaban namin kasi alam nyo naman na ang season na ito talagang tough ‘yung competition,” said Almadro, who personally scouted the Growling Tigers in their last outing three days ago.
UST is in a very dangerous position of missing a semifinals stint after a third place finish last season with 4-6 slate at sixth to seventh spot tied with De La Salle University.
The Espana-based squad got its three-game winning run snapped by the Green Spikers in a sorry five-set loss, 25-20, 12-25, 25-22, 22-25, 11-15, last Wednesday.
