Make it two straight wins for the National University Bulldogs as they cruised past the University of the East Red Warriors, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at the McKinley Hill Stadium in Taguig.
Nico Macapal, who started out hot in Season 78, found his scoring touch once again, hitting early in the match, while league-leading scorer Paolo Salenga added to his season total before halftime to give the Bulldogs another important three points in the UAAP Season 78 Men’s Football tournament.
National U was in control in the first half, dominating possession early, leading to a 13th minute conversion from Macapal for the 1-0 advantage.
The Red Warriors suffered yet another heartbreak within the match, when Mark Anthony Lerion beat Bulldogs keeper Chris Perocho and seemingly found the equalizer for UE, only for the officials to nullify the goal because Lerion was offside.
Adding to the Red Warriors woes, Salenga scored in the 41st minute to double the Bulldogs lead.
With a whole half of football left, a 2-0 lead is far from insurmountable, and the Red Warriors tried their best in the second half, playing more aggressively with hopes of getting back into the match. Unfortunately for the Recto-based booters, there would be no comeback, as NU held on for the important win.
National U coach Lelem Laranas was happy with the win, but says that he’d like the team to score more goals, given that there could be a logjam in the playoff race, and goal difference will come into play.
Currently, the Bulldogs re-enter the top four with four wins, three draws, and two losses for 15 points, mirroring UP’s record, but the Bulldogs have the advantage in goal difference.
UE remains at the bottom with one draw and eight losses.
