Ateneo did get the first goal, which led to six more against Adamson
Sunday evening, the Ateneo Blue Eagles sent the Adamson Falcons to their second straight blowout loss, winning by seven goals to nothing for their third straight win in the UAAP Season 78 Men's football tournament.
While the scoreline shows nothing short of a demolition job for the Eagles, head coach JP Merida says that the big margin wasn't what he wanted his boys to be thinking about. All he wanted them to do was to score the first goal.
"Sinabi ko sa kanila before mag-kickoff, let's get the first goal muna, wag muna natin ilagay sa mentality natin na we're here para tambakan natin. Syempre, it's hard, mahirap yung baka mang-gigil, so sabi ko sa kanila, let's get the first goal and magsusunod-sunod naman 'yan." Merida told ABS-CBN Sports.
True enough, Ateneo got the first goal, six minutes in, and boy, did the goals follow, as Mashu Yoshioka, Jarvey Gayoso, Mikko Mabanag, and Michael Castillo all contributed in the seven-point win.
Aside from the always important three points, that now puts them just behind fourth seed National University, they also managed to trim the goal difference between them and the Bulldogs, who just last week also handed Adamson a 7-0 beating of their own.
Another big win like this, and the Ateneans could just find themselves creeping into the fourth spot before the end of the eliminations.
