By the Numbers: Fatal 4-way for Final Four
As eternal rivals Ateneo and La Salle took the first two Final Four slots, four other teams are now featured in a mad scramble for the last two seats.

Things are about to get more serious in the UAAP Season 78 women's volleyball tournament.

As eternal rivals Ateneo and La Salle took the first two Final Four slots, four other teams are now featured in a mad scramble for the last two seats.

In one corner we have the young and talented UP Lady Maroons that look like they will breakthrough this year. Diliman currently holds solo third and they have a chess master as a coach.

And then we have the FEU Lady Tamaraws, the winningest team in the UAAP who look like they are getting stronger by the day as Bernadeth Pons continues to work her way from injury. The race for title 30 is still on.

Running at third is UST as the proud Golden Tigresses once again hang on for dear life in hopes of returning to the playoffs for the first time in four years. Espana is banking on two high-scoring sophomores but can they perform under pressure?

Finally, the NU Lady Bulldogs are still in the running to prove that they still deserve contender status. After a sizzling start, coach Roger Gorayeb's team has been more bark than bite, but with their collective backs against the wall, this veteran team might just bite back.

But before we go to all of that (the next UAAP playdate features all four teams), let's take a look at the numbers that defined the past week.

8

Straight years the DLSU Lady Spikers have qualified for the Final Four.

Taft formalized its entry in the playoffs with a sweep of Adamson to also extend their current winning streak to four games and a 9-2 record overall.

Since missing the Final Four in Season 70, the Lady Spikers have been a fixture in postseason play and have won four championships in seven finals appearances.

7

Straight years the Ateneo Lady Eagles have qualified for the Final Four.

Not to be outdone, the two-time defending champion Lady Eagles also booked their ticket to the playoffs for a seventh straight season.

During that span, Ateneo has two championships in four straight finals appearances.

4

Number of consecutive games Kim Dy has been La Salle's top scorer.

In the Lady Spikers' current winning streak, Dy has been tearing it up for Taft scoring 11 points vs. Adamson, 14 against UP (tied with Mika Reyes), 12 vs. UST and 14 against FEU (tied with Ara Galang and Majoy Baron).

2

Number of games separating teams that sit in the 3rd-6th spots.

With three games left, the race for the last two Final Four slots should feature a lot of complications and dramatic games.

UP currently has the inside track for one spot as the Lady Maroons hold at least a playoff berth but FEU, NU and UST could still make moves down the stretch.

30

Points scored by FEU's Bernadeth Pons in one game last week, her career-high.

Pons got the Lady Tamaraws a boost over NU in the race for the Final Four by playing perhaps her best game in the UAAP.
