University of Sto. Tomas switches on survival mode to prevent an early vacation in the 78th UAAP men's volleyball tournament.
University of Sto. Tomas fights for dear life on Wednesday when the Growling Tigers meet the National University Bulldogs in the 78th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Opening serve is slated at 8:00 a.m.
The Espana-based squad desperately needs to win all its remaining three games in the eliminations to at least force a playoff for a ticket to the Final Four. UST holds a 4-7 win-loss record tied with idle De La Salle Green Spikers in sixth to seventh spot.
But even if the Tigers sweep their final assignments, their semis bid is already out of their hands. They have to pray that only one team between NU (7-4), Far Eastern University (6-5) and University of the Philippines (5-6) will reach win no. 8.
UST is on a two-game losing skid including an 18-25, 25-21, 19-25, 16-25 loss to semifinals-bound defending champion Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles last March 19 before the Holy Week break.
The Bulldogs, on the other hand, are fresh from a 25-17, 25-19, 25-17, romp of the Fighting Maroons.
A win against the Tigers will give NU at least a playoff for a Final Four seat and boost its chance to vie for a twice-to-beat advantage in the semis.
The Bulldogs defeated UST in straight sets, 25-21, 27-25, 25-15 in the first round.
