UP picks up their fifth win to move into second place in the UAAP Season 78 Men's Football standings.
An early goal form Nino Muros was all that was needed as University of the Philippines moved to the second spot of the UAAP Season 78 Men’s Football standings after dispatching University of the East, 1-0, Thursday afternoon at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo.
The Maroons had control of the match in the early going, with attempts coming from Muros and JB Borlongan, but none falling.
24 minutes, in Muros struck gold in his second attempt, blasting it through UE keeper Lendon Clores for the early advantage.
Things got a lot more physical in the second half, as a handful of fouls were called on both sides. 80 minutes in, Borlongan, who was booked for a yellow card in the first half, got his second yellow card and was sent off, leaving the Maroons to continue on with ten men.
The numbers didn’t favor UE too long though, as JRV Malayo, who also had been booked for a yellow card earlier in the match, was sent off for his second.
In the end, the Maroons held on for the 1-0 win.
Even though the Maroons came away with the win, head coach Anto Gonzales wasn’t too happy with the win, calling the effort “far from their best game.”
Gonzales said that stress, both physical and mental, could be to blame for the Maroons’ subpar performance, as he said that they went through extended training sessions during the break.
Still, the Maroons jump to second place in the standings with 18 points on five wins, three draws and two losses, while UE remains at the bottom with one draw and nine losses for one point.
