CHANGE OF CULTURE. Francis Vicente said he and UE are still working their way out of the losing mentality that has crippled their program.
The University of the East suffered its 57th straight setback in UAAP women's volleyball on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Twenty-six of those losses happened under the watch of Francis Vicente.
Brought to Recto to revive a program that last tasted sweet, sweet victory back in 2012, the former national team mentor is yet to see a ray of light in his stint with the red and white.
Clearly, it hasn’t been pretty for UE who are now in danger of a third winless season in a row at 0-12.
Still, the coach now well into his second season expressed full faith that there is light at the end of the tunnel and his Lady Warriors are making their way there. “If you are rebuilding a team, kailangan mong lagyan ng tiyaga,” he told reporters.
He then continued, “I never give up on what I started. The players need to see na kung sinimulan ko, kailangang tapusin on a high note.”
Once calling the shots for powerhouse programs University of Sto. Tomas in the Juniors and National University in the Seniors, Vicente admitted that he knew from the start that his latest project would take three to five years to fruition.
And despite the 57-game losing streak, he was proud to share that there is progress. As he put it, “Yung mentality (of losing) ng mga bata, unti-unting nawawala na at pumapasok na sa utak nila paano maging winner. ‘Di pa lang nila kaya i-sustain.”
From something intangible, the UE coach said they are nothing but determined to produce the most concrete of proofs – a much-longed for mark on the win column. “Ang goal namin for now is magkaroon kami ng isang panalo lang muna. Magsimula lang sa isang panalo, sunod-sunod na yun,” he said.
However, will the Lady Warriors’ team management have the same patience to see his rebuilding through? “I don’t know if patient sila o hindi, basta ako, I just do my work. ‘Di naman ako magician na malakas agad,” he responded.”
