NEXT IN LINE? Jho Maraguinot is, little by little, showing that there is life after Alyssa Valdez for Ateneo.
More than a few times on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena, there seemed to be a passing of the torch for the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles.
Leaving her usual spot at the outside, fifth-year team captain Alyssa Valdez set the table for at least two attacks from sophomore stud Jho Maraguinot.
All of it was nothing to overthink about with setter JIa Morado still tallying 32 excellent sets.
Nonetheless, the hookups between the two could very well prove to be symbolic once Valdez hangs up her blue and white jersey for good – meaning two more games in the eliminations plus the playoffs.
Asked how she views the heir apparent to her being Ateneo’s primary weapon, the captain said, “Jho naman is super talented and born to play volleyball talaga. She just needs some more experience para ma-build pa yung confidence niya.”
She then continued, “Para malaman pa niya gaano kalaki yung potential niya as a volleyball player.”
However, Valdez was quick to point out that all of it doesn’t mean that Maraguinot should wish to become the next “Phenom.” As she put it, “Anyone could be the next me. Hindi ko nga alam kung bakit the next me. Hindi naman talaga ako yung ano rito.”
She also added, “They can make their own names.”
