The Lady Bulldogs eliminate UST after a five-set thriller.
National University turned a fatal 4-way into a triple threat as the Lady Bulldogs formally eliminated UST from Final Four contention in the UAAP Season 78 women's volleyball tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs kept their season alive in the hardest way possible after surviving another marathon against the Golden Tigresses, 19-25, 25-11, 25-16, 21-25, 15-8, at the San Juan arena Sunday.
After losing a 2-1 lead, NU jumped on the Tigresses early in the fifth set and established and early 7-1 advantage thanks to the exploits of team captain Myla Pablo who finished with 18 points.
The Lady Bulldogs lost two match points but a service error by UST setter Alina Bicar sealed the deal for National U, 15-8.
At 7-6, NU will tie the loser of the UP-FEU matchup for fourth place at the end of the day.
With the defeat, the Tigresses will miss the Final Four for a fourth consecutive season.
"Kami yung naghahabol, obligasyon namin na maglaro ng maganda," head coach Roger Gorayeb said. "Nire-remind lang namin sa kanila [players] na kailangan ang panalo [vs. UST], kasi mabigat din laban namin sa susunod, must win yun eh [La Salle game]."
The Lady Bulldogs can actually forge a playoff with either UP or FEU with seven wins however, NU will need one team to lose out for that to be possible making the game against La Salle all the more crucial.
After a flat opening frame, Jaja Santiago woke up and carried the fight for the Lady Bulldogs in the second and third sets.
NU had the chance to finish it off in set 4 before the Tigresses staged a late rally to stay alive.
Santiago finished with a game-high 22 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
Team captain EJ Laure, who had a sensational start for UST, led the Tigresses with 18.
