The Maroons have a lot to celebrate about as they are one win away from clinching a Final Four berth. UP is assured of at least a playoff.
The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons gave their Final Four chances a big boost after scoring a sweep of UST.
State U will get at least a playoff for the fourth spot with a 25-22, 25-19, 26-24 victory over the Tiger Spikers in the UAAP Season 78 men's volleyball tournament at the San Juan Arena Sunday.
At 7-6, the Fighting Maroons only need one more victory to book their ticket to the Final Four regardless of what happens to FEU and La Salle
The idle Tamaraws currently pose the most serious threat to UP with a 6-7 record.
UST is eliminated from contention with the loss.
Team captain Alfred Valbuena led the Maroons with 19 points as the team continued its run following a five-set victory over the Tamaraws, the game that essentially saved UP's season.
Miguel Wendel added 16 for good measure.
At 4-9, the rebuilding Tiger Spikers will miss the Final Four after being the second seed in Season 77.
Manuel Medina carried the fight for UST with 11 points while Arnold Bautista finished with 10.
