May Luna, the heir apparent to Ara Galang.
La Salle will say goodbye to a host of senior players after the current UAAP season but head coach Ramil De Jesus is already grooming the next set of Lady Spikers that will carry the fight in honor of Taft.
First in line is none other than rookie May Luna, the heir apparent to Ara Galang.
The freshman out of Davao has been a reliable backup for La Salle and her latest audition piece included the game against the UE Lady Warriors where she finished with six points
Despite playing limited minutes because the Lady Spikers are the most loaded team in the UAAP, Luna appreciates the opportunity she gets every game because well, La Salle is loaded with weapons of mass destruction and its not easy to get playing time.
"Happy kasi binibigyan ako ni coach ng kumpiyansa sa sarili," Luna told ABS-CBN Sports. "Kahit second stringer lang kailangan patunayan na worth it ka sa posisyon."
While De Jesus acknowledges the fact that his prized recruit is nowhere near the level of the ace Galang is right now, what is important is the young spiker remains ready when called upon.
The 17-year-old Luna understands her role perfectly and is producing quite nicely when needed.
"Kailangan kapag pinasok ka sa court, dapat patunayan mo na 'coach maasahan mo ako' kailangan bibigyan mo din siya ng kumpiyansa na hindi siya magda-dalawang isip na papapasukin ka sa loob," Luna said.
In what is essentially an on-the-job training for when the young guns fully take over the Taft program after the La Salle big 3 of Galang, Kim Fajardo and Mika Reyes all graduate after Season 78, Luna is passing wit flying colors so far.
"Go lang, buhos ko lahat kasi minsan lang naman 'to."
