The Holy Week break only seemed to help Pons perform at peak level as FEU's top offensive weapon was impressive in two games this week.
On the brink of another Final Four appearance, Far Eastern University has Bernadeth Pons to thank for a solo third spot at this point in time as the UAAP Season 78 women's volleyball tournament nears its dramatic finish.
The Holy Week break only seemed to help Pons perform at peak level as FEU's top offensive weapon was impressive in two games this week to help the Lady Tamaraws come out of a four-team logjam with a 8-5 record, one win away (or one loss from either UP or NU) from securing a playoff berth.
Leading the FEU Lady Tamaraws to an almost-sure Final Four appearance gives Pons the distinction as the new ABS-CBN Sports' UAAP volleyball Player of the Week.
Coming off a week-long break, Pons and the Lady Tamaraws shook off a bad start against a desperate UST Tigresses and won a four-set game, 20-25, 25-20, 25-25, 25-20, to improve to seven wins and five losses.
Pons finished with 20 points on 17 attacks while adding a pair of aces and a block.
A similar performance transpired yesterday against the UP Lady Maroons in a crucial tiff as Pons led the Morayta-based squad to an impressive 17-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-14 comeback win.
She scored 19 points to give her school at least a playoff for the postseason.
The third year spiker out of Negros Occidental edged NU's Myla Pablo for the weekly citation.
Pablo has been on a tear lately as the Lady Bulldogs saved their season with back-to-back wins this week over UP and UST.
She led NU with 14 points in a sweep of the Lady Maroons and had 18, most of them in the 5th set, as the Lady Bulldogs eliminated the Golden Tigresses last Sunday.
