Staying or going? Ateneo de Manila coach Tai Bundit is torn between duty to country or service with the Lady Eagles.
Ateneo de Manila coach Tai Bundit of Thailand is facing a dilemma whether to continue his service with the two-time UAAP women’s volleyball champion or to leave the Philippines and serve his country as an air force officer.
Lady Eagles team manager Tony Boy Liao shared on Wednesday that the third-year mentor has been inquiring about his contract renewal and it seemed like he is having a hard time deciding to accept if he will ink another deal or to continue his national duty in Thailand.
“He’s an Air Force officer sa Thailand, once in a while pag-break uwi siyang Thailand, mayroon siyang mga boss doon gusto siyang pabalikin, kung bumalik siya one rank higher, so pinapipili siya,” said Liao.
“One rank higher o dito siya, if he stays here he will earn bigger, I will not say how much but bigger,” he added.
Just last Holy Week break Bundit returned to Thailand. He went back to Manila last week.
Bundit replaced Roger Gorayeb three years ago and delivered the Lady Eagles’ breakthrough title in Season 76, under his tutelage the Alyssa Valdez-led Katipunan-based squad swept Season 77 and his magic continues in Season 78 as Ateneo secured a twice-to-beat advantage in its seventh straight semifinals appearance with an 11-2 win-loss slate.
“When we won last year, he was asking kung i-renew contract (niya), sabi ko, definitely,” said Liao. “Renew ‘yan kasi sino naman ‘di magre-renew eh nag-champion siya back-to-back pa.”
“Ngayon when we were starting (the season), he was asking me kung paano renewal ng kontrata after this season,” Liao continued.
Liao said that Bundit asked about his contract when Ateneo lost two straight games after a 6-0 start.
“Nag 6-0 kami, then natalo sa La Salle tinanong uli ako papano kontrata,” the team manager said. “Sabi ko ‘wag muna pag-usapan kontrata matagal pa ang tournament eh, kasi nga siguro worried siya.”
Ateneo will definitely give Bundit another deal if he can steer the Lady Eagles to a three-peat or even just a fifth straight championship stint.
