De La Salle builds momentum heading to its marquee match with bitter rival Ateneo de Manila on Sunday.
De La Salle University won a tight five-set match against Thai team Est Cola in a tune up game Wednesday morning at the DLSU gym.
The Lady Spikers showed their impressive form that carried the Taft-based squad to its eighth straight Final Four appearance in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball to edge the younger Thai squad, 20-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22, 15-11.
Est Cola head coach Chamnan Dokmai said that he was impressed with DLSU’s system and commended Kim Fajardo’s skills as a playmaker.
“They are very good. I know some players in that university team,” said Dokmai, who once coached the Thai team in the ASEAN University Games with Ateneo de Manila mentor Tai Bundit as his assistant.
“They are very good especially the setter. Their setter is very, very good,” added Dokmai, whose squad is in Manila for the Philippine Superliga Invitational Final round starting Thursday.
Est Cola will play local club teams three-time RC Cola-Army, F2 Logistics and two-time titlist Petron in a round robin format. The Thai squad will take on F2 Logistics at 4:00 p.m. at The Arena in San Juan.
The Thai squad, composed of Thai junior national team players including four that saw action in the Asian U-23 Championship held in Manila last year, fielded its second six in the first two sets before putting its starters in the third and fourth frame.
It was a nip and tuck battle in the fifth set but with Fajardo orchestrating the attack, the Lady Spikers showed better poise and composure down the stretch to build high morale heading to their marquee match against two-time defending champion Lady Eagles on Sunday to end the elimination round.
DLSU and Ateneo share the top spot with 10-2 win-loss records.
