The UAAP Season 78 men’s football playoff race continues to heat up as two teams looking to break into the top four aim for wins against the league’s current top-two squads.

Fifth-seed Ateneo looks to bounce back against defending champions and top-seed Far Eastern University, while sixth-seed National University will try for three points against second-seed University of the Philippines.

The Ateneo Blue Eagles face a must-win situation after having their four-game winning streak snapped by Katipunan rivals UP in their previous outing. Currently sitting at fifth place, the Blue Eagles will need to get as many wins as they can if they want to secure a spot in the final four.

Still one of the hottest teams in the league today, the defending champion Tamaraws have won six of their last seven games and have propelled themselves into the top of the standings. Their six game winning streak came to an end though after NU managed to hold the defending champs to a scoreless draw.

In their first round meeting, the FEU Tamaraws blew by the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 5-2 for their first win of the season.

Speaking of teams that need to keep on winning, the NU Bulldogs were boasting a two-game winning streak, and were four minutes away from making it three straight, until DLSU blitzed them in injury time. The Bulldogs have managed to bounce back from that however, becoming the first team to not lose to FEU in the second round. Currently at sixth place, every point will be crucial for the Bulldogs, who are eyeing their first playoff berth.

Quietly building a streak of their own, the UP Maroons have already won four straight games and have gone unbeaten in the second round. Currently in second place with 24 points, the Maroons have once again established themselves a legitimate contender for another men’s football crown.

In a highly-anticipated women’s matchup, the top-two teams collide as league-leading DLSU takes on second-seed UP.

Unbeaten and having clinched a spot in the women’s finals, the Lady Archers are now looking to complete a season sweep. Standing in their way are the Lady Maroons, who are looking to make their second straight finals appearance.
