Jarvey Gayoso (11) scored late to help Ateneo turn back FEU, 1-0.
A late conversion from rookie striker Jarvey Gayoso was all that was needed, as Ateneo stunned defending champions Far Eastern University, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the McKinley Hill Stadium.
Playing without the services of captain Mikko Mabanag and Julian Roxas, the Eagles were facing an uphill battle against the defending champs, who were unbeaten in their last seven outings.
The Blue Eagles managed to control the tempo of the first 45 minutes though, but no conversions were made, as the game went into the midgame break, all knotted up a 0-0.
With around ten minutes to go though, Gayoso showed just why he’s a frontrunner for Rookie of The Year, breaking the deadlock and putting Ateneo ahead with an 80th minute goal from an assist from keeper Kenn James.
Ateneo bounces back from their recent loss to UP, while FEU suffers their first loss in the last eight games.
With the win, Ateneo moves back into the four spot with 21 points, overtaking UST.
FEU remains at the top of the standings, but their fate after today rests on the result of the upcoming UP vs. NU matchup.
