KATIPUNAN SKYSCRAPER. Ateneo is, if all goes well, all set to welcome a new attraction in the form of six-foot nine-inch 13-year-old Kai Sotto.
Bid farewell to Justine Baltazar and say welcome to another young talent to look up to – literally.
After bearing witness to how a six-foot seven-inch giant lifted Nazareth School of National University to a dominant championship season, Ateneo de Manila High School will, if all goes well, have their own big man to provide the muscle for their already potent perimeter.
Pending an entrance exam he is confident about, Jr. NBA standout Kai Sotto is set to become a Blue Eaglet. “May usapan na po kami, kailangan na lang pong ipasa yung test,” he told ABS-CBN Sports.
Already standing six-foot nine-inches at only 13 years of age, the young talent stood head and shoulders above his peers in the Jr. NBA Manila Regional Selection Camp last weekend. And he definitely took full advantage of the stage to showcase the skills he has been honing since three-years-old.
As Sotto narrated, “Three years old pa lang ako, nagba-basketball na ako. Bata pa lang ako, bola na ang lagi kong hawak.”
The son of former PBA player Ervin, the younger Sotto will make his transfer from St. Francis of Assissi in Las Piñas to Ateneo in Katipunan Avenue official if he passes the test he took on Tuesday.
Asked about the development, however, Blue Eaglets mentor Joe Silva opted to hold his mouth in saying, “We will comment at the right time.”
According to the teen tower, Ateneo wasn’t the only school who got into talks with them as both De La Salle Zobel and De La Salle Greenhills also reached out to them. Still, he said the blue and white were always his dream colors to wear.
Ateneo’s newest recruit, if all goes well, will be expected to complete a cast that already includes pointman SJ Belangel and wingman Jason Credo. Asked what he will add to the team, he humbly answered, “Kaya ko pong gawin lahat, pero hindi pa ganun kagaling. Pero kahit ganun, gagawin ko lahat para sa team.”
