CROSSING OVER FROM KATIPUNAN. Bo Perasol will be back in the UAAP next season - only now, it will be with his alma mater UP.
Bo Perasol left Katipunan in the 78th Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament, but he didn’t have to venture far to find his new home.
The University of the Philippines is set to officially appoint Perasol as the new mentor for its men’s basketball team on Thursday, sources told ABS-CBN Sports.
A source said that the appointment is 99 percent done, with only the formal announcement left to do. Another shared that the impending arrival of their new coach has long been discussed during practice sessions.
It’s actually more of a homecoming for the former Fighting Maroon captain who donned the maroon and green from 1990 to 1994.
The Diliman-based squad began looking at a change in their coaching staff early in the year, but needed some time to sort out complications both with Perasol and the man he is replacing, Rensy Bajar.
In his lone season in the UAAP, Bajar led the Maroons to a promising start before limping to a 3-11 finish. On the other hand, Perasol oversaw an Ateneo de Manila University side that went 27-17 in his three-year stay.
Sources also said that assistant coaches Mo Gingerich, Allan Gregorio, Poch Juinio, and Joe Ward will remain.
The new coach of UP will inherit a team that lost veterans JR Gallarza and Mark Juruena, but still has a core with so much potential in Diego Dario, Paul Desiderio, and the returning Kyles Lao. They also got a boost from recruitment with talented prospects Javi Gomez de Llaño (UP Integrated School) and Kyle Ong (Xavier School).
