SWEET VICTORY. The UE Lady Warriors win their first game since Season 74 after sweeping Adamson.
Streaks are meant to be broken, especially the dubious ones.
University of the East ended years of futility after scoring a momentous, 25-17, 25-22, 29-27, victory over the Adamson Lady Falcons in the UAAP Season 78 women's volleyball tournament at the San Juan Arena Wednesday.
The Lady Warriors won their first game since Season 74, ending a 58-game losing skid.
Roselle Baliton scored the final two points for UE as the Lady Warriors won an extended third set, 29-27.
"Syempre nandun ka sa isang eskwelahan na ilang taon hindi nananalo ng isang game, para kang nanalo ng championship jan eh. Tapos yung laro cardiac pa," UE head coach Francis Vicente said, who was immediately brought to tears the moment the Lady Warriors finally won.
"Atat na atat ka gusto mo ikaw na lang maglaro dun eh, para matapos na yung game," he added.
The last time UE won a game was Jan. 28, 2012 back in Season 74. They also finished 4-10 that year, with all of their wins coming at the expense of NU and UP.
The Lady Warriors jumped on a shocked Adamson side and took the opening frame, 25-17.
UE then stood its ground in the wild third set as the Lady Falcons saved one match point and threatened to extend the match multiple times.
However, Baliton's back-to-back hits proved to be the difference for UE in a no-bearing game that featured playoff-like atmosphere.
Shaya Adorador led the Lady Warriors with 14 points while Baliton scored 13.
Jemma Galanza tried to carry the Lady Falcons, who lost all of their games in the second round, with 13.
"Natutuwa ako sa kanila kasi nakita ko yung maturity. Natanggap na nila yung sungit ko, yung pagiging sadista ko na coach, yung mga masasakit kong salita," Vicente said.
"At first ang daming problema, pero yung mga problema na yun kaya naman i-overcome. I told them walang bibigay" he added.
