The De La Salle Lady Spikers are back in the Finals for the eighth straight season.
De La Salle on Wednesday made sure that its Finals streak will continue.
The Lady Spikers marched to their eighth straight championship appearance, staving off a late game rally by the Far Eastern University to eke out a 25-15, 27-25, 25-21, victory in the winner-take-all semifinals of the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.
DLSU banked on their championship experience to keep their composure when the Lady Tams cut down an early nine-point lead in the third to just 22-20.
Kim Fajardo played the hero's role in the end, slicing a service ace after Ara Galang pushed the Taft-based squad at match point.
“Minsan nawawala kami sa court pero siyempre hindi kami magpapatalo,” said Fajardo, moments after DLSU set up a fifth consecutive Finals showdown with bitter rival and back-to-back defending champion Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles.
The best-of-three championship starts on Saturday at the Big Dome.
Mika Reyes had 10 points as well as Galang, who scored all but one of her points from attacks, for the Lady Spikers. Kim Dy finished with eight while Cyd Demecillo and Fajardo, who dished out 50 excellent sets, had six each.
The Lady Spikers bounced back from a shocking, 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 21-25, 14-16, loss to the Lady Tams on Sunday.
FEU came back from an 18-9 deficit behind Bernadeth Pons, Toni Basas and Heather Guino-o to breathe down the necks of the Lady Spikers. But with graduating player Galang and fourth year setter Fajardo leading the way, DLSU won’t be denied of a chance to redeem lost glory for the third straight time.
Pons and Basas posted 10 markers each for the Lady Tams, who failed to advance in the championship round since their last appearance in 2008 behind Rachel Anne Daquis where they lost to La Salle led by Manilla Santos.
