Maroons end FEU's two-year football reign
The Maroons get the top seed and get rid of two-time champions FEU.

For the first time in three seasons, there will be a new king on top of the UAAP football mountain.

The University of the Philippines secured the top seed in the UAAP Season 78 men's football Final Four and eliminated two-time defending champion Far Eastern University with a 1-0 win at the Moro Lorenzon Field in Ateneo Thursday.

Kyle Magdato scored the lone goal of the match just before halftime and the Maroons just frustrated the Tamaraws in the second half to hold on for the win.

The Maroons finished the elimination round with 30 points to secure the top seed.

UP's win not only eliminated FEU but it also gave Ateneo a free ride to the playoffs.

Now the Maroons will either face the Tigers or the Blue Eagles depending on how the UST-DLSU match goes.

"I thought we played a very good first half," head coach Anto Gonzales said.

"Towards the end, last 30 minutes, puso na lang. Walang gusto bumitaw, they really wanted to win against FEU."

The Tamaraws had multiple good chances for an equalizer in the second half but failed to convert.

FEU finished the regular season with 24 points, not enough for a Final Four appearance and a chance to go for a three-peat.

UP lost to FEU in the Season 76 finals while the Tamaraws beat the Green Archers last year to go back-to-back.
