Fifth playing year ko and five years na rin kaming magkaharap -- Mika Reyes
Mika Reyes started her collegiate career facing the blue and white-clad opponents on the opposite side of the net.
It’s just a fitting encore for the De La Salle middle to end her colorful career with a final showdown against the two-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles.
“We’re back at it again,” said the 21-year-old mestiza looker and very dangerous woman in front of the net. “Fifth playing year ko and five years na rin kaming magkaharap.”
Game One of the best-of-three 78th UAAP women’s volleyball series starts Saturday at the Big Dome.
Reyes, a recruit from St. Scholastica’s College, and DLSU split the previous four championship showdowns with the Katipunan-based squad, which won the last two including a complete sweep of Season 77.
This season the two teams also has an even elimination round head-to-head with Reyes and the Lady Spikers besting the Alyssa Valdez-led Ateneo in the first round before the Lady Eagles equalized two weeks ago in a thrilling five-setter.
And Reyes, whose rivalry with Valdez goes beyond the volleyball court as far as their legions of fans are concerned, knows how crucial the opening game is.
“I guess magkakalaman siya sa first game of the finals,” said the Lady Spiker, whose crew used their twice-to-beat advantage to dispose Far Eastern University and advance to their eighth straight Finals appearance.
She added that compared to last year, DLSU right now has a better shot at the crown with another graduating player Ara Galang, who missed last year’s finale after sustaining a season-ending left ACL injury in the semis, back in the fold.
“Siguro kung iko-compare ko last season, we are very much ready now,” she said. “Hopefully no injuries again for our team and for the other team.”
Reyes vowed that in this series there’s no holding back.
“I’ll give my best and buong team kaming haharap sa kanila,” said Reyes.
And fans will see a lot more of her signature swag.
“Yes!” she said with a wide smile when asked if she will unleash again her on court antics that La Salle faithful love to see and Ateneo supporters love to hate.
