Mika Reyes and the rest of the Lady Spikers need one more win to capture the UAAP Season 78 women's volleyball championship.
The opening salvo of Ateneo-La Salle V last Saturday was pretty amazing if you wear green shirts.
But if you're official color is blue, well the experience was not so good.
The De La Salle Lady Spikers landed a haymaker to start the UAAP Season 78 women's volleyball finals with a clean three-set win, pushing two-time defending champion Ateneo Lady Eagles on the brink for the first time since game 3 of the Season 76 finals.
Now, Taft is one win away from winning its ninth UAAP title with another victory on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
But before that, let's review some of the numbers from game 1 below.
Number of fans that witnessed game 1 at the Big Dome last Saturday.
It was the biggest crowd for the three Ateneo-La Salle games this season (for obvious reasons) but don't be surprised if that number is broken come game 2 (and maybe even game 3).
Game 1 was slightly higher than the second round matchup between both teams at the MOA Arena (19,266) and definitely higher that their opening round encounter also at the Big Dome (16,536).
Number of sets won by the Ateneo Lady Eagles against La Salle at the Big Dome this season.
For whatever reason, the Lady Spikers have been flawless against their rivals in their two wins this year both at the Araneta Coliseum, winning round 1 and game 1 via sweep.
Game 2 is at the MOA Arena though, the site of Ateneo's five-set conquest in round 2.
Number of blocks by the De La Salle Lady Spikers in game 1 compared to only two of the Lady Eagles.
Easily the most telling stat from Saturday, Ateneo failed to scale the Taft Towers as La Salle's blockers were all over the net, stifling any offense from the champs.
Mika Reyes led the way, recording six blocks while the Baroness of the Block Majoy Baron had three.
Number of double-digit scorers for La Salle in game 1 compared to only one for Ateneo.
Kim Dy once again led the Lady Spikers with 15 points while Reyes added 13. Ara Galang and Majoy Baron scored 10 points apiece for La Salle.
In comparison, only Alyssa Valdez cracked double-digits for Ateneo, scoring a game-high 17 points.
Number of UAAP titles La Salle will have in its collection if the Lady Spikers beat the Ateneo Lady Eagles in the Season 78 finals.
A win for Taft will also break a 2-2 Finals deadlock between both teams over the last four seasons.
