Valdez: ‘Sino hindi magiging emotional sa nangyari’

IT'S JUST EMOTIONS. Alyssa Valdez, as always, played hero in Ateneo's season.
After putting Ateneo de Manila University on her back and carrying them out of a two-set – and then a one-match – deficit, Alyssa Valdez entered the press room for her post-game conference as bright and beaming as ever.
Once the three-time MVP began talking, however, something was definitely different.
“Thankful lang kami na panalo. Laban lang ng laban,” the Lady Eagles’ team captain said in a voice that went through waves instead of her usual straightforward tone. It didn’t last long, but it was apparent she was holding back emotions.
Asked about it a little while later, Valdez said, “Sino hindi magiging emotional sa nangyari?”
Sharing her thoughts even more, she continued, “It’s really heartfelt ‘pag yung team lumalaban. Kikilabutan ka lang talaga kasi makikita mong lumalaban lahat.”
Without a doubt, the match the captain and her troops went through was as emotional as they come. They let their opponents steal the second set and mount a 2-0 advantage over them before imposing their will in the next three and ultimately winning the match.
As always, Valdez did the heavy lifting with 34 points – majority coming in the third to fifth sets when the Lady Eagles were fighting for their lives. “’Pag nandun ka na, kahit anong naraeamdaman mo, papaluin mo na lang yung bola e,” she shared.
Still, the three-time MVP repeatedly said that they won not because of her, but because of their team effort. “It was the team talaga. We all didn’t give up,” she said.
