FAREWELL TREAT --- Alyssa Valdez of Ateneo de Manila won her third straight Most Valuable Player award.
Graduating Ateneo de Manila superstar Alyssa Valdez collected four individual awards including a third straight Most Valuable Player recognition in her farewell season in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
The fifth year Queen Eagle led Ateneo to its fifth straight championship appearance with a stellar performance all season as the Katipunan-based squad bid for a three-peat against arch rival De La Salle Lady Spikers.
Valdez once again outshone the rest of the field to become the first volleybelle to win three consecutive MVP awards after Far Eastern University’s Monica Aleta recorded the feat from Season 63 to 65. In addition to the MVP trophy, the San Juan, Batangas-native also received a check for P50,000 from sponsor Manulife. She also got another check for P25,000 for being named as the Fudgee Barr O-Barr sa Galing Player of the Season.
The 22-year-old national team mainstay also bagged her fourth straight Best Scorer award even after trailing University of Sto. Tomas’ Cherry Rondina in points in the first round of eliminations. Valdez took home the Best Server award three years in a row.
Valdez and the rest of the Lady Eagles are looking to extend the championship series on Wednesday against the Lady Spikers after Ateneo received a straight sets beating in the best-of-three series opener last Saturday.
National University’s Jaja Santiago, meanwhile, got her second Best Spiker citation.
Other individual award winners are Mary Joy Baron (Best Blocker), Kim Fajardo (Best Setter) and Dawn Macandili (Best Receiver and Best Digger) of DLSU while University of the Philippines’ Isa Molde is this season’s rookie of the year. Molde also received a check for P50,000 from sponsor Manulife.
