“I’m just really thankful for the past five years I’ve been in Ateneo and the UAAP, for everything. I discovered myself, I found myself,” -- Alyssa Valdez

Ateneo’s Alyssa Valdez bid goodbye to the UAAP, Saturday night, closing the book on one of league’s most storied careers.

In her five years with the Lady Eagles, Valdez went to the Finals five times, took home the title twice back-to-back, and took home MVP honors three times back-to-back-to-back, as well as a handful of other individual accolades.

More than the honors and awards however, Valdez was more thankful for her growth as an athlete and as a person, as she told everyone within earshot at the Araneta Coliseum media room.

“I’m just really thankful for the past five years I’ve been in Ateneo and the UAAP, for everything. I discovered myself, I found myself,” Valdez said.

As the 22-year old volleyball phenom from Batangas goes down from the hill, her next step remains unsure. Does she play in the commercial leagues in the country? Does she take her talents abroad? Or does she leave volleyball behind for good?

Valdez may have taken a fall in her final UAAP game, but she knows that she can only bounce back and sees this setback as sort of preparation for the “real life” that awaits her outside of Ateneo and the UAAP.

“These challenges, hinahanda lang siguro nila ako sa real life.”

One other possibility is that she comes back to Ateneo as possibly a part of the Lady Eagles management, ala Gyzelle Sy for the FEU Lady Tamaraws, to which Valdez replied jokingly: “I don’t know, I don’t know. Wala pa pong ino-offer sa akin si sir Ricky.”
