HAPPY DAYS AHEAD: Coach Tai gets job extension

We are retaining his (coach Tai Bundit) services -- Lady Eagles manager Tony Boy Liao
Ateneo de Manila may have lost the crown and its biggest star Saturday at the close of the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament, but the heart strong and happy mantra including the man who brought the system for the Lady Eagles will be back next year.
Team manager Tony Boy Liao told ABS-CBN Sports that they have extended the tenure of head coach Tai Bundit of Thailand for another year.
“We are retaining his services,” said Liao of the third year mentor who steered the Katipunan-based squad to the throne in Seasons 76 and 77.
Bundit will retain his position for at least another season when the Lady Eagles gun to reclaim the crown they lost Saturday to bitter rival De La Salle University Lady Spikers.
DLSU dragged Ateneo off the throne in an epic, 19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-16, victory in the winner-take-all Game 3 at the Big Dome to bring the trophy back to Taft Avenue and deny outgoing Queen Eagle Alyssa Valdez a graceful exit in the two proud schools’ fifth straight Finals showdown.
Despite the painful loss, Liao said that the school management is happy with the team’s achievements when Bundit took the job three years ago to replace Roger Gorayeb.
“Gusto nga ni (university president) Fr. Jett (Villarin) na habaan (ang kontrata) e. Ayoko na lang sabihin (kung gaano kahaba) pero ang sabi ko na lang, ‘Father, we’ll do it year by year,’” added Liao. “Kasi nakita niya na noong pumasok siya gumanda ang volleyball program ng Ateneo. ‘Di naman natin made-deny yan e. Kaya nga sabi nga i-retain natin.”
Liao said that only Bundit can decide if we wants to call it quits.
“Next season nand’yan siya unless na siya na ang magsabi na, “I have to go home.” ‘Yun na lang ang makakapigil,” said the team manager. “Pero he loves it here kasi nga na-challenge e. Especially now na natalo kami. Na-challenge siya.”
If Bundit, a military man back in Thailand, decides to go back home, Liao hinted that either former Adamson coach Sherwin Meneses or long time Ateneo deputy Parley Tupaz will take his place.
“Ngayon kung gaano man katagal siyempre kaya nga kinuha natin sina Sherwin Meneses para maging understudy. Sabi ko nga kay Sherwin, actually silang dalawa ni Parley (Tupaz), ito naman (si Tai) hindi naman pwede ito ng matagalan e. Dapat din kayong dalawa pag-aralan ninyo,” he said.
“Pero siyempre ang problema d’yan puwede nilang pag-aralan ‘yan kung papaano (yung sistema) pero ‘yung diskarte will take time,” added Liao.
