NOT TODAY. Ateneo's varsity teams went 0-for-3 on April 30, 2016.
Without a doubt, the biggest news on April 30, 2016 was that three-time MVP and two-time champion Alyssa Valdez failed to end her collegiate career on a winning note.
Making things worse for Ateneo de Manila, neither their Blue Eagles nor their Blue Eaglets were able to provide some silver lining for the defeat of Valdez and their Lady Eagles.
The Blue Eagles were at the wrong end of a come-from-behind win in overtime by the University of the East, 93-91, at the opening of the 2016 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
Ateneo was in control of the contest right from the start and mounted an advantage of as much as 12 before falling victim to the exploits of Bonbon Batiller and Renz Palma. Batiller’s triple over the outstretched arms of Adrian Wong forced extra time where Palma took charge for the Red Warriors.
The decision spoiled Tab Baldwin’s debut as shot-caller for the Blue Eagles and squandered Chibueze Ikeh’s monster 20-point, 16-rebound double-double.
On the other hand, the Blue Eaglets pushed forth their own comeback bid only to be foiled by seven-time NCAA Juniors champion San Beda High School, 81-86.
Ateneo was trailing for the most part until SJ Belangel and Jason Credo plotted out a rally that got them to as close as two points in the final frame. In the end, however, he Red Cubs were able to fend off their foes and hang on to the lead.
With the results for the Lady Eagles, Blue Eagles, and Blue Eaglets all winding up on the loss column, Ateneo is zero-for-three on #PhenomDay.
The good news is, things can only get better for all three of their teams with all the talent and promise they still have.
Saturday, April 30, 2016 just wasn’t Ateneo’s day.
