TIGER POWER. UST alumni came together for a golf tournament and raised a total of P7 million for student-athletes competing in the upcoming UAAP Season 79.
UST was never really big on sponsorhips when it comes to its varsity teams.
And while the university still likes to maintain amateurism and never fully embraced commercialization, some alumni have done their part in making sure the Growling Tigers are not left behind in the UAAP in terms of finances.
A total of P7 million was raised by alumni via a golf tournament last week in order to help UST's student-athletes in the upcoming UAAP season to which the school serves as host.
In a report by the Varsitarian, UST's official student publication, the Rector's Cup drew the insane amount from 108 participants that competed at the Tagaytay Midlands Golf and Country Club last July 28.
"As rector, I could not sleep. Sabi ko 'Bakit ganoon?' This is the right opportunity for us [to help]," Rector Fr. Herminio Dagohoy, O.P. said per the Varsitarian.
The amount collected from the donations would go straight to athletes as a form of subsidy.
"’Yung makukuha na funds dito ay para sa mga student athletes talaga. Ibibigay namin individually, hindi as a team para mas ramdam nila," tournament coordinator Jaika Corpuz said according to the Varsitarian.
Alumni from the College of Science took first place in the Rector's Cup.
The UAAP Season 79, hosted by UST, opens on September 3.
