The UST Growling Tigers found their new anchor as they embark on a post-Karim Abdul era.
Cameroonian Steve Akomo will be serving his residency this year for UST and will be making his debut for the black and gold starting Season 80 of the UAAP.
In a report by the Varsitarian, UST's official student publication, Akomo will have two years to play for UST after transferring from the University of Visayas in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI).
Akomo can no longer play in his original mother league after a stint in the D-League in Cebu.
That's where the Growling Tigers come in.
"A negotiator in my school before recruited me to play for Tigers because I can't play anymore in Cebu. That's why I have the opportunity to play for UST," Akomo said per the V report.
This early, Akomo, who is going to take up Sports and Wellness Management in UST, looks like he's fully invested in thr Tigers who are currently undergoing a transitional period after losing three UAAP finals in the last four seasons.
"I need to save the school first. I [will] give my 100 percent before anything else," the 6'8" center said.
"I hope so, to give my best to the school because basketball is not forever. First things first, save the school, play hard, study hard, and just play good," he added.
UST is the host for Season 79. The new season will open on September 3 and basketball starts on September 4.
