BIG-TIME RECRUIT. Kai Sotto will wear the Ateneo blue and white for the first time in the 2016 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
Ateneo de Manila High School, it’s final – every time SJ Belangel or Jason Credo miss a shot, all is not lost because underneath the basket is a six-foot nine-inch tower reaching out and trying to take care of business.
That tower is named Kai Sotto and he has been officially listed in the Blue Eaglets’ lineup for the 2016 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
At just 13-years-old, the son of former pro player Ervin Sotto caught everybody’s attention after standing head and shoulders above his peers in the Jr. NBA.
From there, the Katipunan-based school immediately got into discussions with the Sottos regarding Kai’s transfer from St. Francis of Assissi in Las Piñas. Both sides did not waste any time getting into an agreement as the young talent took the school’s entrance exam not long after.
According to Ateneo mentor Joe Silva, the younger Sotto participated in practices right after his test. “He has been practicing with us since (three weeks ago) and he will continue practicing with us,” he told ABS-CBN Sports.
Still, the Eaglets held back on any categorical confirmation of Sotto’s status – until they submitted their roster for the preseason tournament. “Everyone will know then. That, I think, is the statement,” Silva explained.
Ateneo’s newest recruit will complete a cast that already includes pointman Belangel and wingman Credo. Nothing but excited about the development, team captain Belangel said, “Malaking tulong talaga siya sa amin. Talagang malaki po.”
