CONSENSUS. Each and every one of the coaches said DLSU was the team to beat in Season 79 - except Green Archers coach Aldin Ayo, of course.
There were no surprises in the UAAP Season 79 press con on Tuesday – De La Salle University was viewed by everybody as the favorites for the championship.
All but one of the head coaches of the eight member-schools chose the Green Archers as the team-to-beat in the tournament.
That means everybody from multi-titled mentor Franz Pumaren of Adamson University to most recent champion coach Nash Racela of Far Eastern University believes that they are all chasing down Aldin Ayo and DLSU.
Of the same mind are National University’s Eric Altamirano; Ateneo de Manila University’s Sandy Arrespacochaga, standing in for Tab Baldwin; University of the Philippines’ Bo Perasol; University of Sto. Tomas’ Boy Sablan; and University of the East’s Paul Varilla, standing in for Derrick Pumaren.
All of them didn’t expound on their statements, but after all, they were just echoing the sentiments of just about everybody who has seen the Archers’ lineup composed of Mythical selection Jeron Teng, hulking Cameroonian Ben Mbala, Rookie of the Year Andrei Caracut, among others.
For his part, however, Ayo said it was actually the defending champion Tamaraws, the much-improved Falcons, and the dangerous Bulldogs who are the teams to beat.
All will be known for sure when the men’s basketball tournament tips off on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum. A battle between the Maroons and the Falcons starts everything off at 2:00 and a matchup pitting the Growling Tigers and the Blue Eagles follows suit at 4:00 PM.
