GROUNDBREAKING. The 79th Season of the UAAP is off to a rousing start following a never before seen Opening Day.
Host school University of Sto. Tomas promised something new and different for the opening ceremony of the 79th Season of the UAAP.
They did nothing but deliver on Saturday with a groundbreaking three-part celebration inside the UST campus in Espana Boulevard, Manila – the first time the launch of the country’s premiere collegiate league occurred inside the grounds of a member school.
Staying true to this season’s theme of “Dare to Dream,” UST presented something never before seen. As school official Gilda Camus put it, “We started to dream a different kind of opening.”
Festivities commenced with the first-ever Ballroom Formation Dance Competition at the Quadricentennial Pavilion Arena. The inaugural iteration of the demonstration sport was a success with the venue at full capacity ans all member schools in participation.
It was then tailed by a parade of officials and student-athletes of each and every member school through the iconic Arch of Centuries and all the way to Plaza Mayor.
There, UST rector Fr. Herminio Dagohoy, OP challenged all student-athletes to live up to the season’s theme. “They will dare to dream and Season 79 is the chance to make that happen,” he said.
Ending his short speech, Dagohoy then officially opened Season 79. “I declare the 79th Season of the UAAP open. Let us dare to dream and let the games begin,” he expressed.
