TAKING FLIGHT. Aaron Black and Ateneo took charge in the final frame to shoo away fighting UST and register a season-opening win.
Getting contributions from expected and unexpected names alike, Ateneo de Manila University is into the win column in the first game of the post-Kiefer Ravena era.
Aaron Black’s game-long brilliance coupled with Anton Asistio’s timely shotmaking allowed the Blue Eagles to prevail over University of Sto. Tomas, 73-69, on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
In a close contest with 13 deadlocks and 18 lead changes, it was Asistio’s entry early in the final frame that sparked the 19-6 surge that turned a two-point cushion into a 71-57 advantage in favor of Ateneo. Talking about Asistio who scored all of his six points during the pivotal push, coach Sandy Arrespacochaga said, “A couple of guys stepped up for us including Anton.”
Still, the Growling Tigers clawed to within 66-71 inside the last minute only to see Black drill a dagger of a long two to finish off the Eagles’ season-opening win. “It was a good game because we played unselfish,” Arrespacochaga expressed.
Black took on the scoring cudgels with 23 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists for the Ateneo side now without neither Ravena nor Von Pessumal. The returning Thirdy Ravena also added a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double to help Ateneo rise to 1-0.
On the other hand, last year’s runners-up suffered a setback to start the season despite the best efforts of Louie Vigil who tallied 21 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
