Sablan brings 2006 title mystique as UST growls for UAAP 79
Can new head coach Boy Sablan lead these batch of Tigers back to promise land?

Technically, UST's Rodil "Boy" Sablan is new since UAAP Season 79 will be his first official stint as a collegiate head coach.

However, the moment you pick his brain is the time you realize that coach Boy is anything but a rookie.

"Actually hindi na ako nanibago kasi I was assistant of coach Pido [Jarencio] before. 2006 champion kami then until 2012 ako so I was not new. Nakita ko naman kung paano tumatakbo ang UAAP, nakita ko naman yung nangyayari sa UAAP," Sablan told ABS-CBN Sports.

More than his ability to effectively run a team, the lost tidbit of coach Boy being part of the staff that won the 2006 UAAP title may be the most important thing he brings to his new job in Season 79.

Because for a team that has lost three of the last four UAAP championship series, a winner is what the Growling Tigers desperately need right now.

And coach Boy, for all intents and purposes, is a winner.

"Doon sa nangyari sa kanila last year, more na ginagawa ko sa kanila is on motivation," Sablan said referring to UST's Season 78 loss to FEU.

"Naramdaman ko yung 2006, ang sarap ng feeling so sine-share ko sa kanila yun. Nandito na kayo, nangyari sa inyo last year, tutuloy lang natin pero hindi natin ito kaya kung hindi tayo magta-trabaho pare-pareho," he added.

Very few things are as painful as to what happened to UST's championship loss in Season 78 and the immediate aftermath that followed.

Add that to the previous defeats of Season 76 and Season 75 and you have a program that needs a win of some sort.

The first year of the Boy Sablan era could provide that win.

"Yung sa amin kasi nina coach Pido during that time, sabi nga ng nakara-rami destiny talaga ma mag-champion," he said.

"So ganito rin, mag-umpisa kami sa baba. We will pray and hoping na magawa namin lahat yung na-plano namin for the last three months," Sablan added.

The Growling Tigers open their UAAP Season 79 against the reloaded Ateneo Blue Eagles Sunday in the main game at 4:00 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum.

LIVE telecast will be on ABS-CBN S+A channel 23 and ABS-CBN S+A HD channel 166 with free online livestreaming available at sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/uaap.
