Lady Bulldogs’ title defense begins with a win
STRONG START. NU's bid to win it all for the third time in a row got off on the right note.

National University’s campaign for another championship got off on the right foot courtesy of a couple of key cogs who were already there for the first two that came before.

Drawing power performances from reigning MVP Afril Bernardino and veteran Gemma Miranda, the Lady Bulldogs scored a wire-to-wire win against University of the East, 62-58, on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.

Bernardino collected 14 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists while Miranda submitted her own 18-point, 14-rebound double-double in the two-time defending champions’ tournament-opening triumph.

NU, as a team, poured in 45 points after only the first two quarters and mounted an advantage of as much as 16. They loosened their pressure in the pedal in the second half, but their double-digit lead proved more than enough to carry them through the final buzzer.

For the Lady Warriors, it was Ruth Tacula who showed the way with 18 points.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs’ biggest threats to another title also started on the season on the right note as De La Salle University made quick work of Far Eastern University, 76-52.

Chay Vergara scored 19 points and Snow Penaranda posted a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double to quickly fill the hole left behind by Ara Abaca.
