NATION OF DOMINATION. Ben Mbala towered above all in DLSU's second straight win to start the season.
De La Salle University needed just three quarters to put away their second consecutive victory to begin the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
And that’s all because Ben Mbala made the most out of his 29 minutes to collect 30 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocks and carry Green Archers right through woeful University of the Philippines, 89-71, on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
DLSU never trailed as Mbala got to work from the get-go and pounded in 12 points after only the first 10 minutes to build a 31-10 advantage.
The Maroons finally put up a fight, however, and neared to 40-46 early in the third until the Archers unleashed a 30-12 onslaught for a 76-52 lead entering the final frame. They wouldn’t be threatened until the final buzzer and en route to a league-leading 2-0.
Abu Tratter and Jeron Teng added 12 points apiece for DLSU.
In coach Aldin Ayo’s eyes, however, it was defense that won them their second straight. “We just played our game especially on defense,” he said.
Indeed, Ayo’s “mayhem” forced 34 turnovers from their opponents which were then quickly converted into 34 points.
For UP, it was again Paul Desiderio who topped the scoring column with 21 points. Falling victim to Ayo’s pressure-packing defense, however, they stumbled to 0-2 to start the season.
