CHANGE DID NOT COME. Afril Bernardino and NU re-asserted their mastery over Ateneo.

Nothing changed from when National University and Ateneo de Manila University last collided in last year’s Finals.

Reigning MVP Afril Bernardino led four other teammates in double-digits and the Lady Bulldogs’ 74-52 romped over Ateneo de Manila University on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Now in the UAAP 79 Women’s Basketball Tournament, the back-to-back defending champions still proved to be no match for last year’s runners-up.

NU only shot 35.8 percent from the field, but had 24 more attempts than their opponents courtesy of a 20-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. They also owned the paint, dominating the battle of inside points, 42-28.

As always, Bernardino was given the keys to everything and tallied 17 points, eight rebounds, five steals, and two assists. Jack Animam and Florymae Ceno added 13 and 12 points, respectively, as the Lady Bulldogs improved to 2-0 and tied for first-place.

For the Lady Eagles, Kristina Decon was the lone bright spot with 13 points and seven rebounds. They now stand at 1-1.

Meanwhile, Far Eastern University took the shine out of Adamson University after a 61-56 decision. Precious Arellado scored 15 points for the Lady Tamaraws who pulled even with the Lady Falcons at 1-1.
